Use PenyuLocker To Lock Or Encrypt A Windows Folder

freeware to encrypt foldersI previously covered an application that allowed you to hide a drive letter from users on your Windows system. Today we will be looking at a small application that will allow you to not only encrypt certain folders on your Windows system but it will also change the icon of the folder or folders you encrypt to a recycle bin.

Once encrypted you will need to reopen the application and enter your password to unlock the folder so that you will be able to read it again.Let’s check out how it works.

First you will need to download the freeware to encrypt folders, which you can do from here. The installer is 854KB and uses practically no memory when in use.

You will need to extract the three files in the zipped folder. Then you will run PenyuLockerInstaller.exe. That will bring you to the installer screen that looks like this:

Click on the start installation button and Penyulocker will start to install. Once installed, you can now open the application from your start menu. When you start the application you will see a simple interface that will allow you to lock or unlock folders at will.

Simply navigate to the folder you want to lock and click the big lock button at the bottom.  I drilled down into my C:\ drive and chose a folder as you can see below:

Then after clicking on the lock button, I am prompted for a password like so:

Type in a password that you will remember. The harder the password the better the encryption â€" but, if you forget your password, you are screwed!

This is the folder I decided to encrypt:

So now let’s see what we have accomplished. By browsing on over to my C:\ drive I can see that the flash folder has been turned into a recycle bin and my files cannot be opened.

You will see the file names that are in your real recycle bin but that is it. Go ahead and try to open the folder. You will see the files listed as if they are in the recycle bin â€" emptying them, restoring them or doing anything to them will not affect your files.

So when I attempt to open that folder this is what I see:

I emptied the recycle bin and then the folder was empty. Now I will try to restore access to the folder by going back into the application and double clicking on the folder like so:

pl9

Then click on Unlock and enter your password:

Sometimes the application comes back and tells you to double click on the folder, but it is already unlocked. By navigating to the folder from Windows we will see that it is back to normal and all the files are accessible again. You can lock multiple folders at the same time regardless of contents.

Do you have another tool that does this easily? What kinds of data are you encrypting? We would love to hear about it in the comments.
