Mouthee is a new app recommendation service that takes the concept of word-0f-mouth and translates it into an app. Accessible through its web-based interface, or on the go using the free iPhone app, Mouthee makes it easy to get recommendations based on your location, or allows you to search for recommendations for restaurants, hotels, movies, music and books, with the use of keywords.
Mouthee takes things one step further than other recommendation apps and services that we’ve seen in the past, by making it easy to not only discover something new to try out, read or watch, it also makes it easy to make reservations at restaurants, buy books, music and more.
After signing up for a free account, you can dive right in and start checking out the latest activity on the service. The home page activity page shows you all the recommendations that have been made by other users. You can drill down and view only recommendations made by your friends.
On the iPhone, you have the added advantage of looking up recommendations made in your location. When checking out a restaurant that someone else has recommended, you can view the location, along with a handy map. Mouthee also takes advantage of other services like Yelp, by pulling in information about the restaurant â€" type, price range and rating. From here you can also view who else on Mouthee has recommended the restaurant.
Movie info includes genre, duration, release date, and provides a link on where to buy the DVD or tickets for the film. Songs and albums include  a link on where to buy the music, and in some cases, you can hear a preview of the song. Book recommendations include information on the book â€" the number of pages, the name of the publisher, as well as a link to buy the book from Amazon.
The next step is to start sharing recommendations of your favourite books, movies, music, restaurants and hotels. For each item, simply enter the name, write a short comment about the film and choose a recommendation â€" ranging from ‘not so much’ to ‘all about it’.
Mouthee really comes to life when you can use it to get recommendations from your friends. Find out if your Facebook or Twitter friends are on Mouthee through the app settings. You can interact with your friends, and other Mouthee users by liking their recommendations, and on the web-based interface, you can also leave comments. With each recommendation, you can share them beyond Mouthee via Twitter, Facebook, send them to a friend, or also bookmark them in the app.
So far, Mouthee users seem to be using it for restaurant recommendations more than anything else, and so far it’s leaning very heavily, if not entirely, to a US-based audience. That said, with books, music and movies, there’s a little something for everyone, making it easy not only to discover new entertainment, but also makes it easy to buy it online.
Mouthee borrows heavily from already existing services like Yelp, but expands the concept to so much more than just restaurants. By giving users a one-click option to go from reading a recommendation to making a reservation or a purchase makes it an interesting choice for those of you who are still on the look out for a way to discover new movies, books, music, restaurants and more.
